Are you planning a trip to Barcelona? Packing for a new city can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure where to start. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

In this blog post, I’ll share with you my complete Barcelona packing list that will have you fully prepared for your adventure.

Trust me, there’s nothing worse than showing up unprepared. I learned it the hard way during my first visit to Barcelona. But now that I live here, I’ve created this packing list to help you avoid making the same mistakes I did.

By following this guide, you’ll be so well-prepared that you’ll feel like a local in no time, no matter the season. So, let’s dive in and make sure you have everything you need to make your Barcelona trip unforgettable!

Travel Essentials and Documents

  • Secure Belt Bag for keeping essential items safe from pickpockets.
  • E-Sim Card to stay connected without the need for store hunting.
  • Passport Holder to protect and organize your most vital travel document.
  • Euros for places that prefer cash or when card machines are down.
  • Credit Cards for secure transactions and potential travel perks.
  • License and Passport (plus photos of each) for identification and emergency purposes.
  • Travel Insurance Documents to ensure you’re covered on your journeys.

1. Secure Belt Bag

Woman in a yellow sweatshirt and black fanny pack with a surprised expression, embodying a trendy Barcelona street style.

A secure belt bag should be at the top of your Barcelona packing list not only for its convenience but also as a safeguard against the pesky pickpockets known to frequent tourist hotspots.

It’s compact and allows you to keep your essential items within easy reach keeping all your important documents safe!

I don’t go anywhere in the city without my belt bag.

2. E-Sim Card

Landing in Barcelona with an e-Sim card means you can skip the store hunt and dive straight into the city life.

You’ve got instant access to everything – maps, spots, and chats with the fam. It’s all about savoring that Catalan vibe worry-free, phone at the ready, and adventure on. Having access to data is also an important safety measure during your trip as well.

I recommend the Airlo e-sim card for affordable and convenient data on-the-go

3. Passport Holder

Open pink wallet with a black interior holding a passport, suggesting a must-have for a Barcelona packing list.

A sturdy passport holder ensures that your most vital travel document stays secure and readily accessible. It also helps to keep your passport in good condition!

You can even get one nowadays that will hold your passport, credit card, and license – the perfect way to keep everything in your belt bag together and organized.

4. Euros

Hands exchanging Euro banknotes, highlighting the need for local currency on a Barcelona trip packing list.

Despite credit cards being the main form of payment just about everywhere now, keeping a few Euros on hand is still smart. Some shops in Barcelona prefer euros still, credit card machines can break, or you may need some euros to keep in cash.

Additionally, if you aren’t planning on getting an e-sim card and want to get a physical sim card, most shops will make you pay upfront, cash only.

Even as someone living in Barcelona, I still always carry about 10-15 € around in different denominations. While you’re traveling, you may want to carry a bit more, but 10-15 € will get you out of most pickles!

    5. Credit Cards

Person handing over a credit card to pay, a convenient payment option for travelers.

Do I really have to tell you why credit cards should be on your packing list? The value of credit cards during travel is self-evident. They not only offer a secure means of carrying funds but also provide a convenient method of payment accepted worldwide.

Furthermore, many credit cards come with benefits such as travel insurance, reward points, and emergency assistance services, which can be invaluable when you're far from home.

Remember to let your bank know before you go to prevent any suspicious activity flags on your account.

    6. License and Passport (and photos of each)

US passport and driver's license over an American flag, essential travel documents

Of course, you'll need your passport to travel to another country!

Having a digital copy of your passport and license can be a lifesaver in case of loss or theft. It will help prove your identity and expedite the replacement process.

Photos can also help authorities locate your records quickly and provide consular assistance in an emergency.

    7. Travel Insurance Documents

Travel insurance form with pen, passport, and accessories

Having travel insurance can make or break your trip, and I'd highly recommend purchasing travel insurance before any big tip. But a quick tip prepping for your next adventure: don't forget to pack the travel insurance docs.

Having a set handy—in both old-school paper and swanky digital form—can be a total lifesaver if things get a bit bumpy while you're out exploring the world. Keep 'em within easy reach to take the stress out of those just-in-case moments.

    Technology

USB cable and power bank on a vibrant yellow background, portable charging options
    • Power Adapter - Ensure you pack a Type F power adapter for Spain, and consider an all-in-one with a Type G socket if UK travel is on the cards.
    • VPN - Secure your online activity and maintain privacy on unfamiliar networks with a reliable VPN.
    • Power Bank - Carry a compact power bank to keep your phone charged during those long days exploring Barcelona.
    • Chargers - Double-check you have all the necessary chargers for your devices to avoid costly replacements on the go.

    8. Power Adapter

Don't forget to include a power adapter on your packing list when visiting Barcelona, as Spain uses Type F power sockets. A reliable adapter will keep your devices charged so you can stay connected throughout your journey.

If you're traveling through the UK, it may be beneficial to get an all-in-one with a type G socket as well.

This is my EU power adapter but this international adapter is great if you're traveling to multiple countries ►

    9. VPN

A VPN is a traveler's best friend, keeping your personal information secure on unfamiliar networks. It's like having a digital cloak of invisibility and is perfect for peace of mind while exploring new places. I work fully remote and travel a ton - so I'm constantly on new networks.

A VPN gives me the security I need to get my work done no matter where I am.

Unsecured connections to public WiFi can result in loss of personal data and even credit card information.

NordVPN is fast, secure, and affordable. Really, you should use it everywhere, not just when you're traveling!

Keep your connections secure with NordVPN

    10. Power Bank

A power bank is the perfect safeguard against the dreaded low battery notification. Traveling Barcelona usually requires longgg days out, and no one wants to get caught in the middle of a city with a dead phone.

A small power bank is small and easy to carry but can be a life saver! I don't know about you, but I don't carry a physical map around - Google Maps takes care of that for me.

I love this Anker Power Bank for day to day and travel

    11. Chargers

There's nothing worse than getting to the airport and realizing y

ou've left one of your chargers at home. Buying chargers on the go can get expensive, so plan ahead and double check that you have all of yours before heading out the door.

    Wearables

    • Comfortable Shoes - Sneakers are a must for walking the city's streets comfortably.
    • Sunglasses - Protect your eyes and look stylish with a pair of cool sunglasses.
    • Hat - Added sun protection for the beach and sightseeing.
    • Hiking Shoes - Durable boots for hiking trips.
    • Nightclub Attire - Pack a smart outfit to meet the dress codes of Barcelona's clubs.
    • Tote Bag - A reusable tote is environmentally friendly and perfect for shopping.
    • Sunscreen - A good sunscreen protects your skin from strong Mediterranean rays.
    • Packing Cubes - Help organize your luggage and streamline packing and unpacking.
    • Pajamas - The comfort of your own pajamas is key for restful sleep away from home.
    • Undergarments - Bring enough for your trip, considering laundry access.

    12. Comfortable Shoes

Casual travel outfit with white sneakers, a smartphone, and water bottle, perfect for a comfortable day exploring Barcelona

Trust me when I say you'll be walking more than you think in Barcelona. You might even find yourself on an e-bike during the trip. There is nothing worse than touring a city with blisters and uncomfortable shoes on your feet. Do yourself a big favor and just get a cute pair of comfortable shoes to pair with your outfits.

I usually go for a pair of white sneakers, and you'll notice most people in Barcelona do the same thing. Whether I'm wearing a dress, workout clothes, or something in between, I don't leave the house without my sneakers. (Unless I'm going to the club, but more on that in a bit)

    13. Sunglasses

Happy traveler smiling on a sandy beach at sunset sitting criss cross applesauce

Don't forget to toss a pair of cool shades into your bag! Not only will they shield your eyes from the bright Barcelona sun, but you'll also fit right in with the city's trendy vibe. They're perfect for those spontaneous rooftop bar selfies too!

    14. Hat

If you're anything like me, sunglasses aren't enough at the beach. I like to protect my face with a hat. Whether you prefer the big floppy ones or just a simple baseball hat, throwing a hat in your bag can make a day at the beach a bit more comfortable.

    15. Hiking Shoes

Barcelona isn't all history and city. When you're out and about discovering the hills and valleys that hug Barcelona, you'll be super grateful for a solid pair of hiking boots. Your feet will thank you.

Walking the uneven paths of Montserrat on a day trip or strolling through the coastal beauty of Costa Brava becomes a whole lot more chill when you've got the right kicks.

    16. Nightclub Attire

When you're getting ready for a night out in Barcelona, it's your chance to showcase that chic little black dress hanging in your closet. Even though Barcelona's nightlife exudes a laid-back vibe, don't be fooled—some clubs might give you the cold shoulder if you show up in jeans or sneakers.

To avoid any fashion faux pas, look up the dress code before deciding on a more relaxed outfit. For those looking to blend in with the city's stylish crowd, women can opt for a more "glam" dress, while men can go for sleek pants paired with a nice collared shirt. Perfect for those Instagram-worthy moments.

And while you can leave the stilettos at home, still opt for something tasteful—leave the sneakers and flip flops for the beach.

    17. Tote Bag

Tote bags are not just a fashion statement; they are incredibly practical, especially for shopping days. In Barcelona, for instance, stores will charge for bags, making a durable tote bag a wise investment the environment and your wallet.

Unlike paper bags that may tear under weight, tote bags offer a sturdier option that can withstand the rigors of daily use. Whether you bring a well-loved favorite from home or pick up a cute cloth bag at a local store, a quality tote bag can be a lasting shopping companion.

I purchased a reusable bag from Zara for 2-3 € years ago—it has proven its worth time and again!

Something like this cute tote bag will last you years

Bonus points if you can match your totes to your outfits!

    18. Sunscreen

Never underestimate the power of sunscreen when exploring this coastal town.

A good broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect your skin and allow you to roam the city worry-free.

Apply it generously, and remember to reapply after a dip in the Mediterranean or every two hours. Trust me, sunburn is the last souvenir you want from the Catalonian capital.

Don't forget to pack your sunscreen!! ►

    19. Packing Cubes

Open suitcase organized with packing cubes, illustrating a practical way to pack everything on your barcelona packing list

Packing cubes are my favorite! It took me a few times to adjust and pack based on my needs, but they are a game changer when it comes to packing efficiently.

Packing cubes make packing, organizing, and unpacking incredibly simple and takes away the stress of keeping your belongings together throughout the trip.

These packing cubes have lasted me five years and counting!

    20. Pajamas

Don't overlook the comfort of your own pajamas while on vacation. They're essential for a good night's sleep after a day of sightseeing and adventures!

    21. Undergarments

Of course, you won't want to forget plenty of undergarments. Consider whether or not you'll have access to a washing machine. Do you need to bring enough for every day or will be able to refresh at some point during your trip? Don't get caught having to turn your undies inside-out!

What to Wear in Barcelona in the Summer

    • Sundresses - Versatile and chic, these are ideal for day-to-night style.
    • Bathing Suits - Essential for enjoying the Mediterranean waters.
    • Cover Up - For stylish transitions from beach to cafe.
    • Quick Dry Towel - Compact and convenient for beach outings.
    • Beach Sandals - Protect your feet on the hot sand
    • Light Jacket/Cardigan - Perfect for cool evenings + a little pop of style.

    22. Sundresses

Fashionable woman in a chic sleeveless white ankle long dress on a bustling street

My personal favorite - a pile of beautiful sundresses. Admittedly, I bring too many sundresses with me anywhere I'm traveling. They're so easy and picture-perfect - pair with a cute pair of comfy sneakers, throw on a light jacket for chilly sunsets, and you're set for your whole trip.

Overall, we don't dress too casually any time of year in Barcelona. Sundresses can be dressed up or down, making them the perfect outfit option. You'll fit in like a local!

Keep in mind you might also want a long dress and jacket that covers your shoulders to visit Sagrada Familia. There is a respectful dress code at Barcelona's most visited attraction.

    23. Bathing Suit

If you're planning to hit the beach, you'll want a bathing suit or two to get you through your trip. If you're planning on visiting Costa Brava towns like Sitges or Cadaques for a weekend, you might want a few more!

If you live in the US run (don't walk) to Skatie! My favorite bathing suits EVER.

    24. Cover Up

A breezy cover-up is a must-have for those relaxing beach days—it transitions seamlessly from the seaside to the boardwalk. With a stylish cover-up, you can enjoy the Barcelona cafes or shops right after soaking up the sun without needing a full attire change.

    25. Quick Dry Towel

Straw hat and sunglasses resting on a beach towel,

A quick dry towel is your perfect beach companion, whisking away water fast and drying off just as quickly, so you're ready to pack up without the dampness.

This makes it super easy to jump from beach to town in no time. Not only is it convenient, but it's also space-efficient, taking up minimal room in your tote bag and suitcase.

This is a great space saver quick dry towel option

    26. Beach Sandals/Shoes

Be sure to pack a pair of beach sandals along with your beach essentials; you'll want to store them separately in your bag to avoid sand getting into your travel shoes.

Once you arrive at the beach, you can switch from your street shoes to your sandals for the perfect seaside experience.

    27. Light Jacket or Cardigan

Even during Barcelona's warm summers, packing a light jacket or cardigan is wise. The coastal breeze in the mornings and evenings can get surprisingly chilly!

Plus, a jacket is a great way to add a dash of style and versatility to your outfits.

What to Wear in Barcelona in the Winter

    • Jacket: Choose a warm, stylish jacket like a wool coat or puffer for comfort and fashion.
    • Layering: Bring short and long-sleeve shirts to adapt to changing temperatures.
    • Pants: Prioritize long pants such as denim or chinos for warmth from November to March.
    • Boots: Comfortable, stylish boots are key; waterproof ones are best for versatility.
    • Raingear: Pack a rain jacket or umbrella, especially for visits from September to March. Choose packable rainwear for convenience.

    28. Jacket

Barcelona's winter, while milder than many European cities, can still bring a chill, especially once the sun sets.

Pack a jacket that will keep you warm - bonus points if it also matches your style and can make for a cute addition to your OOOD. A tailored wool coat or a trendy puffer jacket will keep you cozy and fashionable as you explore in the winter.

    29. Layering: Long and Short Sleeve Shirts

Layering is key to handling Barcelona's changing winter weather, so packing a mix of long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts will give you the flexibility you need. This way, you can add or remove layers as the day transitions from crisp mornings to sunnier afternoons.

    30. Jeans, Long Pants

Jeans and long pants should be a stable for your winter packing list for Barcelona. You can pack both lighter and heavier pairs, but overall, you'll want to stick with the long pants if you're visiting from November to March.

Classic denim, snug corduroys, or elegant chinos - whatever keeps you comfortable and warm during long days in the city.

    31. Comfortable Boots

If you prefer something a little more stylish than white sneakers, comfortable boots will be a must-have during colder Barcelona days. Choose a pair that provides both comfort for walking on cobblestone streets and warmth against brisk air.

Ankle boots are particularly versatile and one of my go-tos as they can be dressed up for a night out or kept casual for daytime excursions. Look for waterproof options to stay dry during unexpected winter showers.

    32. Rain Jacket or Umbrella.

September, October, November, and March are historically the rainiest months in Barcelona. If you're visiting during these months, you'll 1000% want to pack a rain jacket or umbrella, whatever you prefer. Generally, I prefer a packable rain jacket as it's easier to store and pack.

Make sure you get a windproof umbrella like this so it doesn't break!
